CHAPTER 5

Art

Art inspires children to create and use their imagination. True art for young children involves an open-ended, unstructured, and creative process. It is process-oriented rather than product-oriented, which means that children can explore and experiment with art materials as they desire rather than duplicate a given pattern. Art is child-centered rather than teacher-directed so that children have opportunities to use art materials freely in their own creative, original, and unique ways. The concept of art is broader than art tools and supplies and includes loose parts. Loose parts such as glass stones and tiles, seashells and glass, and pebbles, twigs, and leaves enhance creative art development when children can manipulate materials and tinker with them. Children’s creativity increases when they have large blocks of uninterrupted time to express their artistic ideas with loose parts.
